Review: MOGA Caparica 2023
The sun baked MOGA Caparica made a warm and welcome return to Lisbon from May 31 – June 4th and once again this year the sister event to MOGA in Morocco felt like the ultimate travel and music experience. It is a cultured gathering of people from all over Europe with a lust for hedonism, love of good music and passion for all sorts of extra wellness activities.
The whole thing is set on the stunning Caparica beach, just 20 minutes away from Lisbon meaning the festival really embodies the beach and bohemian way of life. There is something similar to the other edition happening in Essaouira, Morocco next October which means you can tell this is a MOGA event – the vibe, the chill atmosphere, the production, the soundtrack and bohemian way of living are all unique to MOGA.
The first night displayed an incredible and eclectic lineup at the stunning Posto Da Onda, one of the two main locations for the festival. We were blown away by the mesmerising performances of Bradley Zero Lovefingers, and more who dropped classy house, disco cure-alls and funk and soul gems that were full of heart. As the sun set on the beach Pedro Moura played a set to match the mood change and as the night ended, the legendary Kerri Chandler provided amazingly deep house vibes.
Day two was one of the strongest lineups – the Irmão stage opened up and introduced a whole new level of party, with a disco ball sparkling up the beach at night. Some of the talents on this stage included Diass, Chaim b2b Jenia Tarsol and Jimi Jules, playing some classic disco tracks. The Posto Da Onda stage was an equally exciting night, with Oceanvs Orientals, Monile who brought the energy and beats, and an impressive set from Shanti Celeste. The closing set of the night was none other than Gerd Janson who dug deep into his arsenal for all manner of colourful sounds.
After the closing set, it is to the after party at The Magic Yard. This venue was a whole different dimension – a millionaire mansion, with a pool and with three different stages. Two are outdoors in the Moga Stage and Yard Stage and an indoor Lifestyling stage. Party goers enjoyed their new home until as food and drink were served there to keep everyone going and keep going they did.
On Day three, the Posto Da Onda stage closed, so the final party took place at Irmão. We began the evening in the VIP area up behind the DJ who was Josh Craig. This final night was a real celebration of funky, soul, disco and soulful house vibes with a load of feel good classics. It was amazing to have our feet in the sand with the disco ball reflecting off us, and seeing the sunset. Sadar Bahar and Hunee were also feel good sets – and to top off the night, Danilo Plessow aka MCDE did his masterfully tasteful thing and sent us all home happy.
MOGA also hosted an OFF program with activities in and around Caparica including a free opening party at Palms, a boat party on the beautiful Tagus river followed by a party at the stunning Lorosae beach club and an array of wellness, yoga classes, meditation, art installations, mouthwatering food and much more. All in all it means there is nowhere quite like MOGA in Europe for those who like to dance, rejuvenate themselves and soak up some gorgeous scenery.
